A Short Warm-Up for Strength Training

Prepare for the movements you will perform without exhausting yourself first.

A warm-up should prepare, not drain

The purpose of a warm-up is to increase readiness for the session and rehearse the movements ahead. It does not need to become a separate workout. Five minutes of easy movement followed by specific practice sets is enough for many ordinary gym sessions.

More preparation may be useful in cold conditions, early morning sessions, or when an exercise feels unfamiliar. Adjust based on the day rather than following a ritual that never changes.

Move from general to specific

Begin with easy cycling, walking, or another comfortable activity. Then move the joints through the ranges you expect to use. Finally, perform the first main exercise with progressively heavier practice sets and fewer repetitions.

  • Easy movement: 3–5 minutes.
  • Movement preparation: 2–4 controlled drills relevant to the session.
  • Exercise-specific sets: begin very light and increase in steps.
  • Rest briefly before the first working set.

Avoid common mistakes

Long static stretching immediately before heavy lifting may not be necessary unless it addresses a specific limitation. Avoid turning warm-up sets into high-repetition fatigue.

Pain is not a warm-up target. If symptoms worsen as you prepare, change the movement or stop and seek appropriate guidance.
